About Invermere and the Columbia Valley
Invermere on the Lake, a lakeside resort community with a population of 3,000, is the economic centre of the Columbia Valley. Located in a unique setting, nestled between the Rocky Mountains to the east and the Purcells to the west, Invermere BC is host to an extensive palette of four-season recreational activities and business services.
Tucked along the north shore of a beautiful lake and watched over by the dramatic Mt. Nelson, the town of Invermere has everything for visitors and residents alike.
Invermere is the economic hub of the valley community, offering a wide variety of retail stores, professional services, restaurants and cafes of all variety, accommodations and more.
Originally called Copper City when it came into existence in 1890, its name was changed to Canterbury in 1900 and nine years later to Invermere, when it was under the control of the Columbia Valley Irrigated Fruitlands. Invermere was incorporated in 1951. Historically, mining, agriculture and lumber were major industries in the area but the valley's breathtaking beauty and favorable climate have made it a world-renowned destination, so the tourism and real estate industries are flourishing in Invermere.
With two beautiful beaches (Kinsmen and James Chabot), the town offers the most public access to Lake Windermere. All recreational activities one can think of in a mountain resort town are available in Invermere, along with rental and specialty shops geared to the outdoor enthusiast.
The town has developed a lovely mix of small-town charm with big town smarts, as business owners continue to evolve to best serve visitors.
Municipally-funded flower beds and hanging baskets splash colour throughout the town, which has retained much of its turn-of-the-century architecture and the town's small parks offer peace and beauty. For art lovers Invermere is a hotbed of activity. The recently renovated Pynelogs Cultural Centre, adjacent to Kinsmen Beach, displays the work of the valley's vibrant arts community, as well as tea and baked goodies during the summer months.
Thanks to a growth boom, Invermere is a true four-season resort town, serving as the gateway to Panorama Mountain Village situated only 18 kilometers west of town, one of the top ski resorts in a region which is blessed with many stellar hills.
